It’s one of the most basic ideas in investing: Diversify and spread risk along various asset classes or, in the case of equities, among different industries. But self-made billionaire investor and entrepreneur Michael Lee-Chin begs to differ.
Taking a distinctly contrarian approach to investing, the founder and chairman of Portland Holdings Inc., a privately held investment company in Burlington, Ontario, argues that when looking at stocks, focusing on specific companies and industries trumps diversification any day. Lee-Chin also doesn’t try to read the tea leaves of economic indicators. “I didn’t create wealth by being a prognosticator,” he says. “I created wealth by finding businesses that are fundamentally sound and that have great business models that I understand and can buy inexpensively.”

And another: Regardless of the broad market’s direction, which companies are in a position to grow profits and reward shareholders this year? Imagine what you could do if you had the answers. Most have worked hard to provide their children with the best of everything—access to a quality education, exposure to a variety of experiences and cultures, and, yes—the ability to enjoy creature comforts we couldn’t even fathom at their age. I don’t believe you should feel guilty for trying to enrich the lives of your offspring. But to put it bluntly, many of us have spoiled our kids and have not prepared them for the real world.
andrew simon wishes he had been one of those lucky investors who bought Google at $100 back when the company first offered shares to the public in August 2004. The 23-year-old teller at Chase Bank in San Francisco watched with envy as the search engine’s share price rose to a peak of $715 by December 2007. Now, Simon is getting his chance to buy one of his favorite stocks on sale. Last October, after the Dow Jones dipped and the S&P sagged, he purchased a small stake in Google (GOOG) at $356 per share—almost half of what it traded for a year earlier. At the same time, Simon loaded up on Intel (INTC), buying 30 shares at $14. When the price dropped to $13 in December, he bought 70 more shares. “It was like shopping on Black Friday, but the prices were even better,” he says.

It helps to look at the world from a different perspective now and then. Here at black enterprise we recently had that opportunity—and it sparked a revelation. Last winter, as the economy slid and markets tanked, two of our youngest staffers could often be overheard earnestly discussing plans to buy shares in many of the same companies whose historic low valuations were giving the rest of us heartburn. As anxiety filled the air, Editorial Assistant LaToya Smith, 24, and Interactive Reporter Renita Burns, 22, saw the obvious upside: This is the best time in recent memory to be getting started as an investor.

The bear market that began late in 2007 turned into a full bore stock market crash last fall. It is important to distinguish between the two. A bear market is a prolonged, substantial downturn—typically 15% to 20% over several months. A crash, on the other hand, is a similar—or worse—fall, but within a few days. To navigate a bear market, investors need to remain rational and think about the long term. However, maneuvering through a crash is different. When others are panicking, which is what happens in a crash, normalcy disappears and you need a combination of discipline, flexibility, and fortitude.

Doug White is no investing novice. An entrepreneur whose 7-year-old company sells and services Apple computers  small and mid-sized businesses, White understands that markets don’t always go up. But when they dive, it still hurts. “I’ve lost more money in my pension this year than I’ve put in to save on taxes,” says the 53-year-old Pennsylvanian about his Simplified Employee Pension Individual Retirement Account. Even so, White resisted the urge to dump stocks. He and wife, Celeste, 52, believe the only way to a comfortable retirement is to cast their lot with the market. “We don’t come from affluent families; we don’t have anything to rely on other than our own planning,” says White, calculating that he may need to postpone retirement by five years to make up lost ground. “We have no choice but to stay the course.”
