being “green” is a priority for her. Each year on Earth Day, she teaches her fourth-grade students at McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia, about protecting the environment. Recycling in the home is second nature to her 10-year-old son, Ryan, whose birthday coincides with Earth Day. She even conspicuously places large, pink-wrapped boxes marked separately for plastics, glass, and aluminum around the room at her monthly Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. meetings. At just about every opportunity, Evans seeks services, products, companies, and methods that focus on the environment.

It’s one of the most basic ideas in investing: Diversify and spread risk along various asset classes or, in the case of equities, among different industries. But self-made billionaire investor and entrepreneur Michael Lee-Chin begs to differ.
Taking a distinctly contrarian approach to investing, the founder and chairman of Portland Holdings Inc., a privately held investment company in Burlington, Ontario, argues that when looking at stocks, focusing on specific companies and industries trumps diversification any day. Lee-Chin also doesn’t try to read the tea leaves of economic indicators. “I didn’t create wealth by being a prognosticator,” he says. “I created wealth by finding businesses that are fundamentally sound and that have great business models that I understand and can buy inexpensively.”

They own a home in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania; a time-share in Kissimmee, Florida; and employ a nanny to care for their son and daughter, Steve III, 12, and Christina, 10. For the Cromitys, the key to the good life isn’t the couple’s annual $150,000 income, although it certainly helps. The entire family avoids impulse purchases, they say.
In 2002, Kristen Tate decided that debt free was the way to be. With a debt load of $28,000 that included student loans, credit cards, and a car note, Tate, who earned $65,000 as an account manager for a global public relations firm, began to pay triple the minimum payment of $200 each month. Tate eventually withdrew money from her savings account and paid off the balance—by 2008, she was completely debt free. Now a self-employed communications consultant, the 29-year-old says she met her goals by drawing on the values she was raised with. “My parents and grandparents stressed the importance of being financially responsible. Rather than buying everything I wanted, I lived frugally and paid down my debt. I wanted the peace of mind of knowing I didn’t owe anyone.” —

And unlike the rest of your friends who moved back home, you, mon frère, landed a job and you’ve got your eye on a sweet studio apartment. But there’s just one hitch—you can’t get the apartment because you just found out that your credit score is terrible—524 to be precise. In fact, those credit cards that came with that free t-shirt (oops! you never got around to paying any of the bills) have gone to collections. What can you—the recent graduate—do to boost your credit score? While paying bills on time is a surefire way to get your numbers up (since it counts for 35% of your credit score), here are a few tips to understanding and raising your score.

Financial wizard Gail Vaz-Oxlade helps families go from red to black by getting to the root of their destructive spending habits. Most families on the show did what it took to own a home, but quickly forgot about the money saving principles that got them there. Why work so hard to buy a home, and then dig yourself into debt? Buying a home is just the first step. Once you become a homeowner you still have to understand how to pave the way to financial security or, better yet, financial freedom.

A 26-year-old woman stood up and shared how she is more than $60,000 in debt as a result of student loans and credit cards. She makes about $40,000 a year working for a non-profit and one of her immediate goals was to purchase a home. The keynote speaker, Michelle Singletary, a nationally syndicated columnist, told her to pump her breaks and focus on paying off her debt first. Her story is all too familiar.
After Shelly Robertson’s nine-year marriage ended in 2006, she quickly adjusted her lifestyle. As part of a two-income household bringing in more than $250,000 each year, Robertson and her ex-husband took spur-of-the-moment vacations to the Caribbean and had the resources to purchase whatever they wanted. But once Robertson became a divorcée in charge of taking care of the couple’s 10-year-old son, she had less money to work with. The changes forced her to become more aware of her financial decisions. Robertson now has a household income of $106,200, which includes monthly court-ordered child support payments of $1,100. Still, the senior program manager at a finance company now maps out all her purchases. The adjustment has been difficult, but the 38-year-old Upper Marlboro, Maryland, resident says she’s up to the challenge.

Educating young minds for some 30 years is no small feat. But it was a love for children that inspired Larry and Brenda Breland to become schoolteachers. While educators don’t always get paid their true worth, these native Mississippians managed to retire from the public school system in 2002 with $180,000 combined from their state retirement plans. The couple also owns several rental properties valued at nearly $1 million, which provide about $3,000 in monthly rental income.

Surely, no one needs to tell you we’re in a crisis. It’s all around you. People are losing homes and jobs as their assets and savings decline in value. This recession is one of the worst in anyone’s memory. In an economy where staying afloat has become a challenge, we wanted to know: How are you doing? To find the answer, we posted a Financial Crisis Survey on blackenterprise.com. The numbers we gathered as part of this exclusive three-month effort tell a powerful story about how African Americans are adjusting to difficult times.

Every parent wants to support his or her child’s dreams and aspirations. Most have worked hard to provide their children with the best of everything—access to a quality education, exposure to a variety of experiences and cultures, and, yes—the ability to enjoy creature comforts we couldn’t even fathom at their age. I don’t believe you should feel guilty for trying to enrich the lives of your offspring. But to put it bluntly, many of us have spoiled our kids and have not prepared them for the real world. That’s why today’s harsh economic climate offers an invaluable opportunity to deliver life lessons they will not learn in the classroom.

Since last year, I have fallen behind on the majority of my bills due to $6,400 in legal expenses I incurred while attempting to keep joint custody of my daughter. My income just isn’t stretching to cover all my bills and pay off my attorney, and it’s hurt my credit. Because I was successful in court, I don’t have time to take on another job to catch up. The only asset I have is a home that was left to me that is fully paid off. What is a feasible option for me to restore my credit?

The problem with most personal finance books is they’re either littered with jargon or they’re written for people with mortgages, salaried jobs, or some sort of established financial plan, even if it is in shambles. Unfortunately, this leaves a void for teens and 20-somethings.

As bad as the economy has gotten in the past few months, the hardships many are encountering pale in comparison with the challenges endured by those who lived through the Great Depression. Between 1929 and the early 1940s, Americans suffered the longest, most devastating economic period in history. Self-sufficiency was the key to getting through those tough times, survivors say, and the importance of saving was the greatest lesson.
