There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t receive scores of phone calls and e-mails about the same issue: finding a job. Although recent reports may claim that the Great Recession has come to a close, the jobless rate is expected to reach double-digits in 2010. Moreover, the U.S. Labor Department reports that the jobless are looking for work for longer periods of time: 35.6% have been out of work for at least 27 weeks or more—the highest level since 1948. As for African Americans, the old adage still holds true that when America gets the sniffles, we contract pneumonia. The black unemployment rate stands at 15.4%, and continues to rise.

Roth, Trent Hamm, and 18 other bloggers have written an easy-to-read guidebook about saving money, making sound investments, increasing earnings, and much more.
There’s no doubt the economic downturn is sparking a lot of anxiety as people worry about financial woes and job loss. But anxiety is nothing more than nervous energy, which can be channeled into actions that can improve your standard of living, experts say. One way to do this: Start a side business so you’ll be less impacted by a salary cut or layoff. “It’s a great time for people who are entrepreneurs who can come up with things to help people now,” says Dr. Gloria Morrow, a licensed clinical psychologist in Upland, California. “Millionaires are born out of a time like this.”

The parallels aren’t there.” (The nation’s jobless rate at press time: 8.9%)

For entrepreneurs whose businesses are less than eight years old, this is the first time they’ve operated in a recession since the previous one took place in 2001. But for business owners who’ve experienced other downturns, there’s a sense of security in that they’ve been through this before and will in all likelihood go through it again. Here are some suggestions from business owners who are no strangers to recessions about how to survive and even thrive when running a business in a down economy.

There’s nothing like an economic downturn to separate the pretenders from the contenders in business. Anybody can look like a brilliant business leader when the stock market is on a seemingly endless bull run and the economy is booming, but it’s during periods of economic adversity that you discover who really knows what they’re doing—whether on Wall Street, in corporate America, or in the CEO offices of the small and mid-sized emerging businesses we count on to provide jobs and generate the revenues necessary to drive the economy forward. The historic and devastating economy of the past year has taken this Darwinian principle to its ultimate expression—weeding among even the contenders to identify the best of the best.
